I think it’s very easy to misconstrue this song. To think that Jon Foreman is talking about the whole escapism idea is too easy of an interpretation. I don’t think Jon would believe so quickly in that. And this is seen all throughout the whole song: “in a world where I belong.”

Musically and lyrically, I feel this song lies between longing for a place and a triumphant return. And I think we long to return, not to some place in the clouds or “up there”, but into the presence of God. St. Augustine once said the same thing: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until we rest in you.” This restful state that we are found is not some place away from the sufferings and pains, but in a world where God looked at it and saw that it was very good.

My Summer Break

I have a one month summer break before summer classes begin. Going to spend a good amount of time either at home, a coffee shop, or a library reading the books that I bought this past year, but have not yet finished them. Hopefully I can use this break to read, think, and write about God, Christianity, the Church, Theology, and Philosophy. Of course, I’ll be playing a few games here and there, catching up to TV Shows, And SLEEP!!! =D

Feeling Useless...

I ALWAYS feel useless when something bad happens to someone I know. Big or small. Somehow, I’m incapable of saying anything that would somehow help them or cheer them up. No words that comes out of my mouth is capable of comforting someone that I care about and I feel simply lost when trying to do so. I feel useless when I’m sitting with people, listening to them and their problems, and all I can do is say ‘yeahs’ and ‘uh-huhs’.

I want to believe what Job’s three friends did was right. Sitting there with Job and suffering with him. That my friend’s pains, sufferings, and heartaches are also my pains, sufferings, and heartaches. And I desperately want to believe that being there for my friends is enough, but somehow, I find myself in the opposite side of the spectrum: in disbelief.

This is one of the reasons why I believe pastoral ministry may not be right for me: I feel that I’m simply incapable of doing anything for anyone.

it’s so hard for me, as a Christian, to watch all the injustice in the world and all the innocence die without anyone knowing or caring while the first world people complain about having to get timeline on facebook when they didn’t ask for it.

God is just. so where is…

This is really my opinion and my thoughts, so you have every right to disagree with me….

The german theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, wrote that “the church is the physical manifestation of Christ on earth.” Jesus, who is in every nature God, came down to earth for those who are oppressed and poor. A just God. And if we are to believe that we are to be like Jesus and believe what Bonhoeffer said is true, than the answer to the questions, “Where is God? and Where is the justice?”, is us. We are to be God’s justice in this world.

What troubles me that this doesn’t inspire much. And I confess, it doesn’t inspire me either. or at least inspiring me to go to some place in Africa and be a missionary. =[ We’ve become too comfortable with sitting at our desks or couches watching the world from afar. Throwing our moneys at organizations is a lot easier than us doing something about it. personally. Of course, I’m not saying that the only way to make a difference in the world has to be outside our country. I’m just suggesting that there should be more Christians doing God’s justice everywhere. Especially in the U.S. not just in Africa.

I have always been appreciative of Chris and Tammy for starting the homeless ministry. It reminds us that there ARE people in our country that are suffering as well. Not to the extent of the pictures we see in Africa, but suffering nonetheless. And it’s a real tangible way of showing God’s love and grace to real people. True, just giving food, snack, and toiletries isn’t really doing much. But we are doing something aren’t we? it may not have a lasting effect, but we go and give food, just like Jesus came for the oppressed and the poor. To show God’s love, grace, mercy, and justice to those who need it the most.

I don’t believe in a God who magically does things or a God who is aloof and says “there is a plan”. I believe in a God who humbled himself to come down to earth and does God’s work. (or His’ work. I don’t know….)

Acts 17 says “God is not served by our hands if he needed anything.” That’s a terrible blow to my pride, but it’s also the best news I can hear because sometimes we have this misconception of God; we think he’s this Jerry Maguire character looking at us and going “you complete me.” But we don’t. He’s already complete. He’s a community. He’s a Trinity. He doesn’t need us. And so that kind of frees us up too because when we start talking this message we don’t think like ‘everyone’s salvation is contingent on us.’ Like if I say the right thing or if I do the right thing. And if I don’t, they’re not going to get saved. Here’s the deal: God’s the one who saves people. Not us.”
